Philipp Arndt in front of a melt lake

I am working on automatic detection of melt pond surfaces and lake beds in 2D photon point cloud data from NASA’s ICESat-2 laser altimetry mission to quantify meltwater depths across all Antarctic ice shelves. I will be using these ICESat-2-derived depths along the satellite’s ground tracks to train statistical learning models capable of multiple regression for depth retrieval from multispectral satellite imagery with broader coverage. The resulting meltwater volume data would improve our understanding of how ice shelves are responding to a changing climate, and thus help improve future predictions of sea-level rise.
