For my PhD research, I employ airborne and satellite remote sensing data to investigate the ocean-driven processes by which Antarctica’s floating ice shelves gain and lose mass. Ice shelves are a critical piece of the sea-level rise puzzle because they restrain the grounded ice that flows into the Southern Ocean and contributes to sea-level rise. The two main phenomena that I study are a small-scale iceberg calving mechanism triggered by elevated ocean melting and the refreezing of ice on the bases of large ice shelves.
