I study ecosystem dynamics along the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), with a focus on marine heterotrophic bacteria. My lab, the Bowman marine microbial ecology lab, uses genetic, experimental and modeling approaches to understand extreme bacteria around the globe. For my PhD, I will use these techniques to understand the bottom-up (nutrients) and top-down (grazing) controls on bacteria abundance and their ecosystem functions along the WAP, in collaboration with the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) at Palmer Station.
